What the April 2023 Pentagon leaks exposed

Summary
A retrospective on the classified-document leaks that confirmed Ukrainian military vulnerabilities while Russian strikes continued on the ground.
What did the leak of classified US documents mean for Ukraine's allies and for Kyiv itself? On 13 April 2023, that question was still open, three days after U.S. officials confirmed the documents were genuine.
Two sets of classified US documents on the Russo-Ukrainian War had appeared online on 8 April 2023. They also held intelligence that the United States had gathered on other nations, including North Korea, China, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. So the exposure reached well beyond the battlefield in Ukraine.
On 10 April 2023, U.S. officials confirmed that top secret government documents on the war had been spread on social media. They said the material revealed details of Ukrainian military vulnerabilities. The Pentagon referred the matter to the Department of Justice, which opened a criminal investigation.
The war continued
The fighting did not pause. On 9 April 2023, a Russian missile strike on Zaporizhzhia destroyed a residential building and damaged dozens of others. Two civilians were killed and another was injured. Russian attacks were also reported in Orikhiv and Huliaipole.
What it showed
The two developments, taken together, showed a war fought on two fronts: one of missiles and civilian harm, the other over the security of sensitive information. The leak put details of Ukrainian weaknesses into public view, and it exposed US intelligence on other states. The criminal inquiry was the formal U.S. response at that point.
