Poland reinforces Belarus border as London targets Russian judges

Summary

A look back at two regional pressure points recorded between 31 July and 3 August 2023.

What did the final days of July and the start of August 2023 show about tension on Europe's eastern edge? On 3 August 2023, two developments from the preceding days stood out, one military and one legal.

On 1 August, Poland ordered more soldiers to be deployed near its border with Belarus. The Polish Ministry of National Defence said two Belarusian helicopters, which were carrying out training exercises, had violated Polish airspace. The order for extra troops followed that claim.

A day earlier, on 31 July, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on judges and officials involved in the prosecution of activist Vladimir Kara-Murza. He had lost his appeal against a 25-year sentence for treason. The sanctions were aimed at those who handled his case.

Two different pressures

The two moves worked in different arenas. Poland responded on the ground, adjusting its troop numbers along a frontier it shares with Belarus. London responded through sanctions, naming individuals tied to a court process in Russia.

Both were reactions to specific events: an alleged airspace violation in one case, a lost appeal in the other.
