What the strikes on Odesa Oblast exposed

Summary

A look back at the security picture in the days around 11 December 2022, from power cuts in the south to pressure at Zaporizhzhia and Bakhmut.

What did the security picture in Ukraine look like on 11 December 2022? The reports from the preceding days point to pressure on several fronts at once: civilian infrastructure, a nuclear plant, and a besieged eastern city.

Power in the south

On 10 December 2022, Russian drone strikes on two power facilities left more than 1.5 million people without electricity in Odesa Oblast. The scale of the outage showed how a limited number of strikes on energy sites could affect a very large civilian population, part of a wider set of Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure.

Staff taken at Zaporizhzhia

On 9 December 2022, Ukraine's Energoatom said Russian soldiers had abducted two senior staff members from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. According to Energoatom, the two workers were beaten before being driven off in an unknown direction. The report added a human dimension to the continuing crisis at the plant.

Bakhmut under shelling

Also on 9 December 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of destroying the front-line city of Bakhmut after weeks of relentless shelling by Russian forces.

Dissent inside Russia

The same day, a Moscow court sentenced the prominent opposition figure Ilya Yashin to eight and a half years in prison on charges related to his criticism of the war in Ukraine.

Reading the pattern

Taken together, these reports show the war reaching beyond the front line: into the electricity supply of a region, into the workforce of a nuclear facility, into a city's survival, and into the courtroom of a country whose critics faced long sentences. They do not by themselves settle where any of these developments would lead, but they describe the security environment as it stood on 11 December 2022.
