What 7 December 2022 showed about the war

Summary

A look back at the shelling of Kurakhove and the strikes and attacks of the preceding days.

What did the war look like on 7 December 2022? Reports from that day and the days before it pointed to civilian harm in Donetsk Oblast, continued strikes on infrastructure, and an attack deep inside Russia.

On 7 December 2022, Russian forces shelled Kurakhove in Donetsk Oblast, killing ten civilians and injuring five others, as reported at the time.

Strikes in the preceding days

Two days earlier, on 5 December 2022, Russian forces launched another wave of cruise missile strikes on Ukraine. Two people were killed in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and homes were destroyed. The strikes also damaged critical infrastructure, causing power outages in many other areas.

The same day, Russia said a long-range drone attack had hit the Dyagilevo Air Base and the Engels-2 Air Base. According to Russia, three servicemen were killed and four others injured, and two aircraft were damaged.

Taken together

The reports from 5 and 7 December 2022 show three strands of the war running side by side: missile strikes that cut power across many areas, shelling that killed civilians in a frontline town, and an attack on air bases on Russian territory. Each was reported separately, and the reports themselves do not tie them into a single sequence.
