What France pledged to Ukraine on 31 January 2023

Summary

A look back at the French military aid announcement that came days after Washington's tank decision.

What did France add to Western military support for Ukraine on 31 January 2023? French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that France would send 12 additional CAESAR self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine.

He also said France could train Ukrainian Air Force pilots to operate French fighter jets. The offer was presented as part of France's latest military support package.

The days before

The announcement followed another major pledge. On 25 January 2023, US President Joe Biden announced that the United States would send 31 M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Taken together, the two announcements, made six days apart, showed Ukraine's partners continuing to expand the kinds of equipment and training on offer.
