What happened in the war around 30 January 2023?

Summary

A look back at the claims and shelling reported in the days leading up to 30 January 2023, from Bakhmut's northern approaches to Kherson and Sumy Oblast.

What did the days around 30 January 2023 look like along Ukraine's front lines and borders? Reports from 28 and 29 January described contested battlefield claims in the east and attacks on civilian areas in the south and north-east.

Claims north of Bakhmut

On 29 January 2023, forces of the Wagner Group said they had captured the village of Blahodatne, north of Bakhmut. Ukraine rejected the claim and said it had repelled the attack.

Shelling in Kherson

Also on 29 January, Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson. Three people were killed and six others injured. A hospital, a school and a bus station were damaged.

Strikes in Sumy Oblast

On 28 January, the Russian Air Force carried out an airstrike on Seredyna-Buda in Sumy Oblast. A kindergarten was destroyed and nearby residential buildings were damaged. No casualties were reported. The towns of Esman and Shalyhyne were also damaged by cross-border shelling.

A claim about Novoaidar

On the same day, 28 January, Russia claimed that a Ukrainian HIMARS missile strike on a hospital in Novoaidar, Luhansk Oblast, had killed 14 people and injured 24 others, including patients and medical staff.

Taken together, the reports from those two days show a war fought through competing battlefield claims near Bakhmut and through strikes and shelling that hit civilian infrastructure in Kherson and Sumy Oblast. Of the accounts, the Blahodatne and Novoaidar ones came with claims made by one side and, in the Blahodatne case, a direct rejection by the other.
