What Sweden pledged to Ukraine on 19 January 2023

Summary

A look back at a Swedish military support package announced on 19 January 2023, days after a first in-person meeting between Ukraine's and America's top military officers.

What did Sweden promise Ukraine on 19 January 2023? Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson announced that Stockholm would send its self-propelled Archer Artillery System, 50 Combat Vehicle 90 infantry fighting vehicles and NLAW anti-tank missiles to the Ukrainian military.

The announcement was presented as part of Sweden's latest military support package for Ukraine, covering artillery, armoured infantry transport and anti-tank weapons in a single delivery.

A meeting two days earlier

The Swedish announcement followed another development in Ukraine's international military relationships. On 17 January 2023, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, met Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, in person for the first time.

The two events were separate, and the reports from those days do not link them. Together they show the international military contacts and support surrounding Ukraine's armed forces in the third week of January 2023.
