Two attacks in occupied Ukraine before 23 December 2022

Summary

A retrospective on reports from 21 and 22 December 2022 of a shelling in Donetsk and a car bombing in the Kherson region.

What did the final days before 23 December 2022 show about security in the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine? Two incidents reported on consecutive days gave part of the answer.

On 21 December 2022, two people were killed and five injured when a hotel and a restaurant in Donetsk came under shelling. Among the injured were Dmitry Rogozin, a former Russian Deputy Prime Minister and head of Roscosmos, and Vitaliy Khotsenko, Prime Minister of the Donetsk People's Republic.

The following day, 22 December 2022, Andrei Shlepa was assassinated in a car bombing in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region. Shlepa was the Russian-installed head of Liubymivka, in Kakhovka Raion. Russia accused Ukraine of being behind the attack.

The two reports concerned different places and different kinds of violence: shelling in a city, and a bombing aimed at a single local official. Both took place in territory under Russian occupation, and both were reported in the two days before the date covered here.
