Odesa under fire as Kerch yard is hit

Summary

A look back at 6 November 2023, when Russian drones and missiles struck Odesa two days after a Ukrainian strike on a Crimean shipyard.

What did 6 November 2023 show about the pattern of the war's strikes on both sides? On that day, Russian forces attacked Odesa with drones and missiles, injuring at least eight people and damaging infrastructure, including the Odesa Fine Arts Museum.

Two days earlier, on 4 November 2023, Ukrainian forces had struck the Zalyv Shipbuilding yard in Russian-occupied Kerch, Crimea, with cruise missiles. The attack damaged the Russian corvette Askold.

Taken together, the two episodes show strikes aimed at ports and shipbuilding on the Black Sea coast, with the Odesa attack reaching a cultural institution as well as other infrastructure. The Odesa casualties were at least eight injured, and the damage extended beyond the museum.

The sequence is worth recalling for its geography: a Ukrainian missile attack on a shipyard in occupied Crimea on 4 November, followed by a Russian drone and missile attack on Odesa on 6 November 2023.
