What the March 2024 missile strikes exposed

Summary

A look back at the Russian strikes on Kyiv and Lviv and the missile that crossed into Polish airspace, as reported on 24 March 2024.

What did the weekend's attacks reveal about the reach of the war? On 26 March 2024, the question was still fresh, because two events reported on 24 March pointed in the same direction.

Russia launched major airstrikes on Kyiv and Lviv, using Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and drones. The strikes damaged ground-level infrastructure at Ukraine's main gas storage site. Lviv lies in Western Ukraine, so the attack was not confined to the front line or the capital.

The same day, a Russian cruise missile violated NATO airspace over Poland. Aircraft from the Polish Air Force were activated in response.

Taken together, the reports describe a campaign that hit energy-related infrastructure and, in one case, crossed into the territory of a NATO member. Kyiv's western regions and Poland's border airspace were both part of the picture. Beyond the damage at the gas storage site and the activation of Polish aircraft, the reports record no further consequences from the airspace violation.
