What did Russian strikes in Kherson do?

Summary

A look back at civilian harm and frontline shelling reported around 24 November 2023.

What was the toll of the war on civilians as of 24 November 2023? Reports from the preceding days gave a grim picture across southern and eastern Ukraine.

On 23 November 2023, a Russian cluster munition strike in Chornobaivka, in Kherson, killed at least three civilians. Russian artillery shelling also injured five people, and more than 60 residential buildings were reportedly damaged.

Two days earlier, on 21 November 2023, the United Nations Human Rights Office said more than 10,000 civilians had been killed in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022. It added that it expected the actual death toll to be "significantly higher".

On 19 November 2023, the Ukrainian military shelled Russian-occupied Kalmiuske Raion in Donetsk Oblast. The strike hit a dance hall in Kumachove during a performance, killing about 20 Russian troops and the Russian actress Polina Menshikh.

Taken together, the reports from 19 to 23 November 2023 showed fighting that continued to reach civilian areas and gathering places in both Russian-held and Ukrainian-held territory.
