Japan sanctions firms as Patriot deliveries prioritised

Summary

A look back at two security-related developments reported on 20 June 2024, as the Russo-Ukrainian war drew in sanctions and air-defence supplies.

What did allies do to strengthen Ukraine's position in the days leading up to 21 June 2024? Two announcements from 20 June 2024 offered part of the answer.

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced sanctions on firms based in China, India, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The stated reason was their alleged support for Russia in the Russo-Ukrainian war. The list of countries showed that Tokyo's measures reached companies well beyond Russia itself.

Separately, the United States placed Ukraine first among the countries due to receive ordered deliveries of MIM-104 Patriot missile systems. The decision put Kyiv at the head of the queue for the air-defence systems.

Together, the two steps reflected pressure on two fronts: restricting the firms accused of helping Moscow, and moving air-defence equipment towards Ukraine.
