What did 17 July 2023 reveal about the war's edges?

Summary
A look back at a day on which reports from the days around it pointed to corporate retreat, foreign aid and unrest beyond Ukraine's borders.
What did the news around 17 July 2023 say about how far the war in Ukraine reached? Reports from the preceding days showed it touching boardrooms, diplomacy and neighbouring territories, far from the front line.
Business under pressure
On 16 July 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised a temporary state takeover of the shares held in Russia by French agribusiness Danone and by Baltika, the brewer owned by Carlsberg. The step formed part of a wider response to many private companies, these two included, that had been scaling back their operations in Russia during the war.
The move belonged to a larger pattern. Many private companies had ceased operations in Russia, or donated, or matched donations, to the Ukrainian government or Ukrainian organisations, in response to Russia's seizure of Ukrainian territory in 2014 and 2022. Others applied various sanctions. The takeover order showed the Russian state responding to that corporate retreat.
Support arriving in Kyiv
On 15 July 2023, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol made an unannounced visit to Kyiv and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He announced that South Korea would pledge US$150 million in additional aid to Ukraine.
Tensions beyond the front
The same weekend brought other regional news. On 16 July 2023, Oleg Khorzhan, a Transnistrian communist and opposition leader, was assassinated in a stabbing attack in his office.
On 15 July 2023, Russia said it would investigate whether the North Korean Hwasong-18 missile had landed in its exclusive economic zone.
A day in context
Taken together, these reports show a conflict whose effects were felt in corporate decisions, in aid pledges from Asia and in the politics of the wider region. None of these items alone defined 17 July 2023, but together they sketch the range of pressures surrounding the war on the eve of that date.
