Odesa grain stores and Mykolaiv hit on 21 July 2023

Summary
A look back at the Russian strikes on southern Ukraine on 21 July 2023, and the events of the preceding days.
What did Russia's latest strikes on southern Ukraine target on 21 July 2023? Grain stores in Odesa and a building in Mykolaiv, according to reports from that day.
In Odesa, the Russian Armed Forces struck grain warehouses with Kalibr missiles. Governor Oleh Kiper reported that 120 tons of crops were destroyed and two civilians were injured. In Mykolaiv, a strike on a building killed two civilians.
Odesa under repeated fire
The grain-warehouse attack came two days after a night-time Russian missile attack on Odesa on 19 July 2023, in which at least 12 people were injured. Odesa was therefore hit more than once within the same few days.
Aid and Crimea in the background
On 19 July 2023, the United States announced a $1.3 billion military aid package for Ukraine. It included four NASAMS air defence systems, anti-tank missiles, Phoenix Ghost and Switchblade attack drones, and landmine-clearing equipment, among other items.
The same day, a fire broke out at military training grounds in Crimea. More than 2,000 people were evacuated and a nearby highway was closed.
Taken together, the reports from 19 to 21 July 2023 show strikes on civilian and agricultural targets in the south, alongside an announcement of new air defence and other military support for Ukraine and a fire at a military site in Crimea.
