What happened on 24 July 2023 in the war?

Summary

A look back at a day of Russian strikes on Kostiantynivka and Odesa Oblast, drone damage in Moscow, and new US sanctions tied to Wagner.

What did the war look like on 24 July 2023? It was a day of strikes on civilians and port infrastructure in Ukraine, drone incidents in the Russian capital, and a sanctions announcement in Washington.

Strikes on towns and ports

In Kostiantynivka, a Russian missile strike killed a child and wounded six other people. In Odesa Oblast, Russian forces attacked with drones, destroying grain warehouses at the Reni Commercial Seaport and injuring seven civilians.

The attack on Odesa Oblast came after a nighttime Russian missile strike on the city of Odesa on 23 July 2023. That attack killed at least one person, injured 22 others and severely damaged the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Journalist wounded near Bakhmut

Dylan Collins, a journalist for Agence France-Presse, was wounded in Bakhmut by a Russian drone attack on 24 July 2023.

Drones over Moscow

The war also reached the Russian capital that day. Two drones damaged buildings in Moscow, including one near the Defence Ministry headquarters.

Sanctions linked to Wagner

Separately, the United States announced sanctions on three senior Malian officials, among them Defence Minister Sadio Camara. Washington said they had allegedly helped to facilitate the presence of the Russian paramilitary Wagner Group in Mali.

Taken together, the day's reports covered a missile strike on a town in the east, drone attacks on a Danube river port and on a front-line city, and incidents in Moscow. They also included a US measure aimed at Wagner's presence in Africa.
