What happened in Kyiv's courtroom on 5 July 2023?

Summary

A look back at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court explosion and the wartime reports that surrounded it.

What happened at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Kyiv on 5 July 2023? At 18:20 local time, an explosion took place in the court in the centre of the city, the city military administration said. It was one of several developments that drew attention in the days around that date.

The man at the centre of the incident was Ihor Humenyuk, a defendant in the case and a former member of the Sich Battalion. He died after injuring two police officers in what was reported as an apparent escape attempt.

A war still shaping daily life

The explosion came amid continuing Russian attacks on civilians elsewhere in Ukraine. On 4 July 2023, Ukrainian officials said Russian forces had struck Pervomaiskyi in Kharkiv Oblast with missiles, injuring at least 38 civilians and damaging infrastructure. The same day, two people were killed in Russian shelling of Kherson, and three more were injured by shelling in Chernihiv.

On 3 July 2023, Russian drone attacks on Sumy killed two people and injured 19 others. In response, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for a major upgrade of anti-aircraft defences.

Diplomacy and sanctions

The days before 5 July 2023 also brought developments abroad. On 3 July, Zelenskyy asked Georgia's ambassador, Gela Dumbadze, to return home within 48 hours to negotiate the transfer of Mikheil Saakashvili to a Ukrainian clinic. Saakashvili, the imprisoned former Georgian president and a Ukrainian citizen, was reported to be in declining health.

The same day, Ukraine's National Agency on Corruption Prevention added the British conglomerate Unilever to its list of international sponsors of war, claiming that the company's Russian operations indirectly fund the invasion. Also on 3 July, Indian oil refiners began paying for Russian oil imports in Chinese yuan, an alternative to the US dollar, because of the sanctions against Russia.

Why the courtroom incident stands out

The Kyiv court blast was a single event inside the capital, set against reports of strikes on Kharkiv Oblast, Kherson, Chernihiv and Sumy. The reports from 5 July 2023 establish the time, the place, Humenyuk's death and the injuries to two police officers. They place a violent episode inside a courthouse in the middle of Kyiv, alongside a wider run of wartime news that spanned military, diplomatic and economic fronts.
