What the mid-December 2023 war reports showed

Summary

A look back at reports from 13 to 16 December 2023, spanning a missile attack on Kyiv, a drone crash in Romania and a strike in Kherson Raion.

What did the days leading up to 19 December 2023 reveal about how far the war reached beyond the front line? The reports from 13 to 16 December point to three things: pressure on civilians in cities, spillover near NATO territory, and continued fighting in the south.

Kyiv and the south

On 13 December, a Russian ballistic missile attack in Kyiv injured more than 50 people, part of Russian strikes against infrastructure. Three days later, on 16 December, Russia said two civilians were killed and two others injured in a Ukrainian missile strike on the Russian-occupied village of Nova Maiachka in Kherson Raion. Both episodes show civilians exposed on either side of the line of contact, though the claim about Nova Maiachka came from Russia.

A drone in Romania

On 14 December, Romania said a Russian drone had crashed on its territory, leaving a crater in Grindu, in Tulcea county near the Ukrainian border. Romanian Air Force F-16s and German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons carried out joint patrols in response to the violation of NATO airspace. The response, involving aircraft from two allied countries, showed how quickly the alliance's air forces worked together when the war's effects crossed a border.

Sanctions enforcement in the United States

Also on 14 December, former FBI agent Charles McGonigal was sentenced to more than four years in prison for violating U.S. sanctions on Russia, including laundering money for oligarch Oleg Deripaska. The case concerned enforcement of sanctions rather than battlefield events, and it ran alongside the military developments of the same week.

Reading the week

Taken together, the reports from this period describe a war in which strikes on a capital, an incident at a NATO member's border and a court sentence over sanctions all belonged to the same picture. The scale of each event differed, but each was reported within four days of the others, ahead of 19 December 2023.
