What the Pentagon leaks exposed by 13 April 2023

Summary

A look back at the state of the leaked US documents inquiry as of 13 April 2023, and what had been confirmed by then.

What did the public know on 13 April 2023 about the leak of classified US documents on the war in Ukraine? The outline was already clear, and it raised concerns well beyond the battlefield.

The first signs came on 8 April 2023, when two sets of classified US documents relating to the Russo-Ukrainian War were leaked online. They were not limited to Ukraine. They also included intelligence the United States holds on other nations, among them North Korea, China, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

On 10 April 2023, US officials confirmed that top secret government documents on the war had been leaked on social media. According to those reports, the material revealed details of Ukrainian military vulnerabilities. The Pentagon referred the matter to the Department of Justice, which opened a criminal investigation.

Why it mattered

Two features stood out. The first was the content: assessments of Ukrainian weaknesses, published while the war continued. The second was the range: intelligence on countries far from the front line was reported to be among the documents, which meant the exposure touched US dealings with several governments.

The war itself did not pause. On 9 April 2023, a Russian missile strike on Zaporizhzhia destroyed a residential building and damaged dozens of others, killing two civilians and injuring another. Russian attacks were also reported in Orikhiv and Huliaipole.

By 13 April 2023, then, the position was a confirmed leak of top secret material and a criminal investigation, set against continuing attacks on Ukrainian towns.
