What happened on 2 August 2023 in Izmail

Summary

A retrospective on a drone strike in Odesa Oblast and the aftermath of drone attacks near Moscow in the preceding days.

What did the war look like on 2 August 2023? On that day, a Russian drone strike in Izmail, in Odesa Oblast, damaged administrative buildings and grain storage facilities.

The strike was one of several reported in the days around that date, and the other incidents showed how the fighting was reaching well beyond the front line.

Drones near Moscow

On 1 August 2023, Russia said it had destroyed three drones near Moscow. One of them damaged the 21st floor of the IQ-quarter mixed-use complex, which hosts offices for the Ministry of Economic Development. Vnukovo International Airport temporarily closed for the second time in two days.

The disruption extended to air travel abroad. Also on 1 August, Turkmenistan Airlines announced a temporary suspension of its flights from Ashgabat to Moscow following the drone attacks. Its flights were to go to Kazan, in Tatarstan, instead.

Kryvyi Rih

A few days earlier, on 31 July 2023, a Russian ballistic missile struck an apartment complex and a university building in Kryvyi Rih, in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. At least six civilians were killed and 75 others were injured.

Taken together, the reports from 31 July to 2 August 2023 describe strikes on civilian and economic sites in Ukraine, along with drone incidents in the Moscow area that affected an airport, a government ministry's offices and airline schedules.
