What happened in the drone war by 3 August 2023?

Summary

A look back at reported drone strikes on Izmail and near Moscow in the days before 3 August 2023, and their effect on flights.

What did the drone war look like on 3 August 2023? Reports from the preceding days pointed to strikes on both sides of the front line, in southern Ukraine and near the Russian capital.

On 2 August 2023, a Russian drone strike hit Izmail in Odesa Oblast. It damaged administrative buildings and grain storage facilities, according to reports at the time.

Drones near Moscow

A day earlier, on 1 August 2023, Russia said it had destroyed three drones near Moscow. One of them damaged the 21st floor of the IQ-quarter mixed-use complex, which hosts offices for the Ministry of Economic Development. Vnukovo International Airport temporarily closed for the second time in two days.

Flights rerouted

The disruption extended beyond Russia's borders. Also on 1 August 2023, Turkmenistan Airlines announced a temporary suspension of flights from Ashgabat to Moscow following the drone attacks. Its flights would instead go to Kazan, in Tatarstan.

Taken together, the reports from 1 and 2 August 2023 showed damage to grain storage in the Odesa region, a hit on a Moscow office complex, and airport and airline schedules altered in response.
