What did the drone exchange of 25 November 2023 show?

Summary

A look back at a night of large-scale drone launches by both sides, and at the civilian toll in Kherson region two days earlier.

What did the exchange of drones on 25 November 2023 amount to? As reported at the time, Russia launched 75 drones against Ukraine from two directions: Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Kursk region. Ukraine, in response, launched 20 drones against Russia, including the capital, Moscow.

The numbers were lopsided, with Russia's launch almost four times the size of Ukraine's. Yet the targeting was notable: Ukraine's drones were reported to have reached as far as Moscow.

The toll in Kherson

Two days earlier, on 23 November 2023, a Russian cluster munition strike in Chornobaivka, in Kherson region, killed at least three civilians. Russian artillery shelling also injured five people, and more than 60 residential buildings were reportedly damaged.

Taken together, the two days showed a war in which long-range drones crossed the border in both directions, while civilians in the south continued to bear the cost of shelling and cluster munitions.
