What happened in Kherson on 27 December 2023? Russian drone and artillery strikes killed at least five people and left around 70% of households in the city without power, according to Kherson governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
The governor's account described both the human toll and the damage to the electricity supply, with the outages reaching most homes in the city.
The strikes followed another attack on 22 December 2023, when Russia launched a mass drone attack on Kyiv. Several residential districts were hit. A block of flats was damaged in Solomianskyi District, and at least two people were injured there. Heavy damage was also reported in Holosiivskyi District.
Taken together, the two episodes showed Russian strikes reaching residential areas and infrastructure in both the capital and the southern city of Kherson in the last days of 2023.
