What did 21 December 2023 follow in Ukraine?

Summary
A retrospective look at two violent incidents reported in the days before 21 December 2023.
What was the news picture on 21 December 2023? The days just before it brought two separate reports of violence, one from the front line in the south and one from a village council in western Ukraine.
On 16 December 2023, Russia said two civilians were killed and two others injured in a Ukrainian missile strike on Nova Maiachka, a Russian-occupied village in Kherson Raion. The claim came from the Russian side and was reported as part of the southern Ukraine campaign of the Russian invasion.
A day earlier, on 15 December 2023, a councillor threw grenades during a session of the village council in Keretsky. One person was killed and 26 were wounded. The attacker was also seriously injured.
The two incidents were unconnected in place and circumstance: one was a wartime strike in an occupied area, the other an attack inside a local council chamber. Together they show the range of violence that was being reported in the days leading up to 21 December 2023.
