Missile strikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv, and German helicopters

Summary

A look back at a day of Russian missile attacks on two Ukrainian cities and a German pledge of helicopters for Black Sea patrols.

What did 23 January 2024 show about the security picture in Ukraine? It combined a heavy Russian missile attack on civilians with a new pledge of Western military aid.

Six civilians were killed and at least 77 others were injured in Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv. Ukraine said it had shot down 21 of the 41 missiles launched.

On the same day, Germany announced that it would donate six SH-3 Sea King helicopters to the Ukrainian Air Force. The aircraft were intended to help Ukraine patrol the Black Sea.

Strikes inside Russia

Two days earlier, on 21 January 2024, a drone attack hit the Ust-Luga Multimodal Complex in Russia's Leningrad Oblast and caused a large fire. Novatek, the Russian gas producer, subsequently suspended all operations at the complex in response. Ukraine claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taken together, the reports from those days describe a war fought on several fronts: missile fire on Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory, and continuing foreign support for Ukraine's forces.
