Denmark and Spain widen support for Ukraine

Summary

A look back at two Western commitments announced in the final days of May 2024, on F-16 use and military aid.

What did Kyiv's partners promise in the last days of May 2024? On 31 May 2024, two recent announcements stood out, one on how Western-supplied aircraft could be used and one on money.

On 30 May 2024, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Denmark had approved Ukrainian airstrikes on Russian territory using Danish-supplied F-16 jets. The statement came during the 2024 Kharkiv offensive, and it bore on the wider debate over Russia–NATO relations and military aid to Ukraine.

Three days earlier, on 27 May 2024, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez signed a bilateral security pact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Spain pledged €1 billion (US$1.1 billion) of military aid.

The two announcements differed in kind. Denmark addressed the conditions under which equipment it supplied could be used, while Spain combined a formal bilateral agreement with a financial pledge. Both were made as part of military aid to Ukraine during the war.
