What 6 June 2024 showed about Europe's pressures

Summary
A retrospective on a day of fighter-jet pledges and a deadly incident on the Belarus border.
What did Europe's security picture look like on 7 June 2024, after a day of announcements and one death on its eastern frontier? Two reports from 6 June pointed in different directions: one about support for Ukraine's defence, the other about danger on the border with Belarus.
Fighter jets for Ukraine
On 6 June 2024, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, announced that France would send Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighter aircraft to Ukraine. He also said France would train Ukrainian pilots, with the aim of completing this by the end of 2024. The announcement was part of the military aid being provided to Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War.
A death on the Belarus frontier
The same day, a Polish border guard soldier died after being stabbed by a migrant who was trying to cross the EU border from Belarus. The incident was reported as part of the Belarus–European Union border crisis.
A separate verdict in Florence
On 5 June 2024, a court in Florence convicted the American journalist Amanda Knox and sentenced her to three years in prison over her accusations connected to the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher in Perugia. The sentence was to count as time already served. Kercher was a British student on exchange from the University of Leeds who was murdered at the age of 21.
Reading the day
The French pledge concerned equipment and training for Ukraine's air capability, with a stated deadline of the end of 2024. The death of the Polish soldier concerned the EU's frontier with Belarus. The reports do not tie the two events together, and the Florence verdict belonged to an entirely separate case. Taken together, they show how varied the news from Europe was in those days: military support for Ukraine, pressure at the border, and the legal aftermath of a long-running criminal case.
