What happened on 22 April 2024 in Ukraine's war?

Summary

A missile strike on a Kharkiv broadcast mast and a large British aid pledge marked the day, following US House approval of a wider aid package.

What did the war look like on 22 April 2024? It combined a strike on civilian infrastructure in Kharkiv with a significant announcement of Western military support.

On 22 April 2024, Russia hit the Kharkiv TV Tower with a Kh-59 cruise missile. The upper half of the tower collapsed, and the broadcasting signal in Kharkiv was disrupted.

The same day, the United Kingdom announced its largest ever military support package for the Ukrainian military. It pledged 400 vehicles, including 162 MXT-MVs, as well as 60 boats, 1,600 air defence missiles and 4 million rounds of firearm ammunition. London also promised an additional £500 million in funding.

The days before

The British announcement followed a decision in Washington two days earlier. On 20 April 2024, the US House of Representatives passed a series of bills that would provide $95 billion in military aid to countries including Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

On the same day, the Governor of Smolensk Oblast in Russia said a Ukrainian drone attack had caused a fire at a fuel depot in Kardymovsky.

Taken together, the reports from 20 to 22 April 2024 showed Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, Ukrainian drone attacks on targets inside Russia, and allied governments moving to supply Ukraine's armed forces.
