What happened in Odesa and Moscow on 1 May 2024?

Summary
A retrospective on a day of ballistic missile strikes on a Ukrainian port city and a Moscow display of captured Western armour.
What did the war look like on 1 May 2024? Two scenes, hundreds of miles apart, captured it: a missile attack on the Black Sea port of Odesa and an exhibition of captured Western hardware in Moscow.
On 1 May 2024, two Russian ballistic missiles struck Odesa, killing three people and injuring sixteen others.
The strike came two days after another attack on the city. On 29 April 2024, a Russian missile strike in Odesa killed four people and injured 28. Ukraine said Russia had used an Iskander-M ballistic missile with a cluster warhead in that attack.
Taken together, the two strikes within three days killed seven people and injured 44 in the city, according to the figures reported at the time.
A display in Moscow
The same day, Russia put captured NATO military vehicles and equipment on show at an open-air exhibition in Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow. Among the vehicles on display were a German Leopard 2 tank and an American M1 Abrams tank.
The exhibition and the strikes were separate events, and the reports of the day do not link them. Together, they marked 1 May 2024 as a day on which the war was visible both in the casualty counts from Odesa and in the display of seized Western equipment in the Russian capital.
