Deadly strikes hit Kharkiv region on 19 May 2024

Summary

A retrospective on a day of Russian attacks that killed at least eleven people in Kharkiv Oblast, days after a Ukrainian drone raid on Russian refineries.

What did the war look like in Kharkiv Oblast on 19 May 2024? It was marked by two separate Russian strikes that killed at least eleven people and wounded dozens.

In the first, a double tap missile strike hit a recreation area near Kharkiv. At least six people were killed and 27 others were injured. A double tap strike involves a second hit on the same site.

The second attack used a multiple launch rocket system against two villages in Kupiansk Raion, also in Kharkiv Oblast. Five people were killed and nine others were injured.

The days before

Two days earlier, on 17 May 2024, Ukraine had launched a massive drone attack across southwestern Russia. The raid caused fires at several oil refineries, including at the port of Novorossiysk.

The reports describe the two events as separate episodes of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Together they show attacks being exchanged on both sides of the border in the same weekend.
