Lviv shooting of Andriy Parubiy, a week on

Summary

A retrospective on the killing of a sitting MP and former parliamentary speaker, and the days that followed.

What did Ukraine know by 5 September 2025 about the killing of Andriy Parubiy? The outline was clear: on 30 August 2025 the sitting member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada was shot dead in Lviv.

Parubiy was 54. The attack took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street, according to later accounts of the case. As reported at the time, a gunman whose identity was not yet known had carried out the assassination, and a manhunt for the suspect was under way in Lviv Oblast.

An arrest within days

The search did not last long. By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. That meant that by 5 September the case had moved from a hunt for an unknown attacker to a matter involving a person in custody.

The killing was notable for who the victim was. Parubiy was a serving People's Deputy and had previously chaired the national parliament, so the shooting in a city far from the front line drew attention across Ukrainian politics.

Looking back, 5 September sat between the shock of the shooting and the questions that follow any such case. The reported facts were the date, the place, the victim and the arrest in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.
