What happened after the Chuhuiv An-26 crash?

Summary

A look back at the training flight that ended in disaster near Chuhuiv in Kharkiv Oblast, and at the national mourning that followed.

What was the state of Ukraine's response on 29 September 2020, four days after a military training plane came down in Kharkiv Oblast? The crash itself had happened on 25 September 2020, and its aftermath was still being absorbed.

An An-26Sh aircraft crashed on approach to land near Chuhuiv during a training flight. On board were cadets from Kharkiv Air Force University. As reported at the time, more than 20 people were killed. Later accounts put the toll at 26 dead, with one other person wounded. The aircraft carried 27 people, and one of them survived.

The plane, which bore tail number 76, belonged to the 203rd Training Aviation Brigade. It was destroyed in the crash.

Ukraine declared 26 September 2020 a day of mourning. By 29 September 2020 the country was therefore already in the period after that observance, with the loss of young cadets from the air force university at the centre of attention.

The crash concerned a training mission, not a combat operation. The victims were people preparing for service in the air force, which is why the loss was felt so strongly at the university in Kharkiv.
