What did Ukraine's campaign start and Russian ban mean?

Summary

A look back at 4 January 2019, days after a presidential campaign began in Ukraine and Russia widened its sanctions.

What was the political backdrop in Ukraine on 4 January 2019? Two developments from the closing days of 2018 framed it: the start of a presidential election campaign and a new round of Russian sanctions.

The presidential pre-election campaign in Ukraine began on 31 December 2018, so by 4 January 2019 the contest was already under way.

Two days earlier, on 29 December 2018, the Russian government had widened its sanctions against Ukraine. It banned imports of industrial goods, agricultural products and foodstuffs from Ukraine, according to an approved list.

The two events fell within the same week. The campaign set the domestic political calendar, while the Russian measure extended restrictions on Ukrainian goods entering the Russian market.
