What the Parubiy killing meant for Ukraine

Summary
A look back at the shooting of a sitting MP and former parliamentary speaker in Lviv, and the manhunt that followed.
What was known on 31 August 2025, the day after Andriy Parubiy was killed in Lviv? Parubiy, a sitting member of parliament and a former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, had been shot dead on 30 August 2025. As reported at the time, an unknown gunman carried out the attack and a manhunt for the suspect was underway.
The attack
Parubiy was 54. The shooting happened at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street in Lviv. The victim was a current lawmaker and a man who had previously led the country's parliament, so the killing struck at the top of Ukrainian public life, far from the front line.
The search
On 31 August 2025 the gunman had still not been identified, and the search continued. Later, by 1 September, a suspect was arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.
Why it mattered
The killing of a sitting MP who had also been the speaker of parliament is a matter of national political weight in its own right. It took place in Lviv, a western city, and the manhunt on 31 August 2025 was the central public question: who carried out the attack, and whether the gunman would be caught quickly. That question was answered within a day, when the arrest in Khmelnytskyi Oblast was reported.
