Modi and Xi meet in Kazan after five years

Summary

A look back at the BRICS sideline talks of 23 October 2024, and a cargo plane crash in Sudan two days earlier.

What did it mean when the leaders of India and China sat down together for the first time in half a decade? On 23 October 2024, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with President of China Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

The meeting was the first bilateral encounter between the two countries' leaders in five years. It came in the aftermath of the 2020 border skirmishes between Indian and Chinese troops.

A crash in Darfur

Two days earlier, on 21 October 2024, an Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane crashed in North Darfur, Sudan. The crew of two Russians and three Sudanese nationals was killed. The Rapid Support Forces claimed that they had shot the aircraft down with a surface-to-air missile and said they had recovered its flight recorder. Russia said that its diplomats in Sudan were investigating the crash.
