What did Poroshenko decree on 31 May 2018?

Summary

A look back at a presidential decree on the Ukrainian language and a Polish defence debate about US troops.

What did Ukraine's president decide on 31 May 2018? President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree proclaiming a decade of the Ukrainian language, covering the years from 2018 onwards.

The decree designated the ten-year period as the decade of the Ukrainian language, placing language policy on the presidential agenda that day.

Poland's troop talks

A few days earlier, on 28 May 2018, Poland's Minister of Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak, said he had recently held talks with US officials in Washington D.C. The subject was the permanent stationing of thousands of US troops in Poland as a deterrent against Russia.

The two items came from different capitals and concerned different questions: one cultural and domestic, the other about security in the region. Together they showed the range of political business across Ukraine and its neighbours in the final days of May 2018.
