What happened around 3 April 2019 in Ukraine and beyond

Summary

A look back at a Kyiv-region airport opening, a Ukrainian boxing title defence and a Russian training move in Venezuela.

What was the world watching on 3 April 2019? For Ukraine and its neighbours, the days around that date brought a mix of infrastructure, sport and geopolitics.

On 31 March 2019, a second terminal, Terminal F, began operating at Boryspil international airport. It was designated for low-cost and charter flights.

A day earlier, on 30 March 2019, Oleksandr Gvozdyk beat Doudou Ngumbu by technical knockout and kept his WBC champion's title.

Further afield, on 2 April 2019, Russia opened a helicopter training facility in Venezuela. Under the plans, the Russian state-owned company Rostec would train Venezuelan pilots to operate Mi-35M gunships and transport helicopters. As reported at the time, the move came after the White House warned Moscow against sending troops or military equipment to the country.

Why it matters

The three developments were unrelated, but each shows a different side of the period. Boryspil's new terminal added capacity for budget and charter travel. Gvozdyk's win kept a world title with a Ukrainian boxer. The Venezuela facility put Russian military training in a country that Washington had just warned Moscow about.
