Lviv, a gunman and a manhunt: Parubiy's killing

Summary

A look back at the shooting of Andriy Parubiy in Lviv on 30 August 2025 and the days that followed.

What did Ukraine know about the killing of Andriy Parubiy by 5 September 2025? The essentials had been in place since 30 August, when the sitting member of parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada was shot dead in Lviv.

Parubiy was 54. The attack took place at around 10:35 am local time on Yefremov Street, as reported at the time. An unknown gunman was blamed, and a manhunt for the suspect began the same day.

A suspect in custody

The search did not last long. By 1 September, a suspect had been arrested in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, according to later accounts of the case. That arrest came two days after the shooting.

The case drew attention because of who the victim was. Parubiy was not a retired figure: he was a serving deputy, and he had also led the Ukrainian parliament as its speaker. The killing of such a figure in Lviv, a city in the west of the country, was reported as an assassination.

Where matters stood on 5 September 2025

By 5 September 2025, the shooting was a week old and a suspect had already been detained. The killing remained a significant political event in Ukraine, and the arrest in Khmelnytskyi Oblast marked the first major step in the investigation.

This retrospective covers only what was established in those first days: the date and place of the attack, the identity of the victim, the manhunt and the arrest.
