Ukraine's health minister says third wave peaked

Summary

A look back at the claim made on 13 April 2021 about the coronavirus peak, and at the parliamentary vote on medical cannabis a week earlier.

Had Ukraine passed the worst of its third coronavirus wave? On 13 April 2021, the country's Minister of Health, Maksym Stepanov, said it had: in his assessment, Ukraine had reached the peak of the third wave.

The statement was the central health-policy message of that day. It framed the epidemic as having reached its highest point, with the implication left to listeners to draw.

A different health vote a week earlier

Health policy had also been on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada a few days before. On 7 April 2021, the parliament voted to legalise the use of medical cannabis products in Ukraine.

The two items were separate. One was a minister's reading of the course of the pandemic; the other was a legislative decision on medical products. Together they show the range of health questions in Ukrainian politics in the first half of April 2021.
