Toretsk and the death of a detained journalist

Summary

A retrospective on reports from Toretsk and on the confirmation of Victoria Roshchyna's death, published 10 and 11 October 2024.

What was the situation in Toretsk on 11 October 2024? According to the city's military administrator, Russian Armed Forces had taken more than half of the city in Donetsk Oblast. The administrator said Ukraine's Armed Forces were fighting back at eight different locations.

The report came as part of the Battle of Toretsk, a stage of the wider Eastern Ukraine campaign in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

A confirmed death in captivity

A day earlier, on 10 October 2024, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the death of journalist Victoria Roshchyna. She had been held prisoner by Russia since August 2023.

The two reports, one from the front line and one concerning a detained journalist, were separate developments. Together they marked the final days of the week for Ukraine's security picture, in a war that continued to be fought on the ground and in captivity.
