Drones over Ukraine and a refinery in Krasnodar Krai

Summary

An analysis of the paired drone strikes reported on 7 July 2025, and what they showed about the war's two-way air campaign.

What did the drone war look like on 8 July 2025, the morning after one of its busier days? Two events reported on 7 July 2025 set out the pattern: Russian drones struck civilian areas across Ukraine, while Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery inside Russia.

Russia launched more than 100 drones at areas across Ukraine on 7 July. Ten civilians were killed and 38 others were injured. The figures describe an attack that spread across the country rather than concentrating on a single front.

On the same day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a long-range drone strike on Krasnodar Krai in Russia. The main oil refinery in Ilsky was damaged.

Two kinds of target

The two reports describe different kinds of strike. One was a broad Russian drone attack whose toll fell on civilians. The other was a long-range Ukrainian strike on a single industrial site in Russian territory.

The civilian toll fits a pattern documented over the course of the war. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has said Russian forces exposed civilians to unnecessary and disproportionate harm, including through weapons with wide-area effects fired into populated areas. Later UN-documented tallies, as of 2026, put civilian deaths at no fewer than 16,000, with an estimate as high as 40,000.

What the day showed

The events of 7 July 2025 show a war in which drones were used in both directions and at long range. Ukraine's strike reached Krasnodar Krai, and the damage to the Ilsky refinery was the concrete result. Russia's attack reached communities across Ukraine, and its result was ten dead and 38 wounded.
