Modi and Xi meeting in Kazan: what it signalled

Summary

A look back at the Kazan talks between India and China, and a cargo plane crash in Sudan reported in the same days.

What did it mean when the leaders of India and China sat down together in Kazan? As of 24 October 2024, the meeting held a day earlier, on 23 October, was the main item in the reports from the 16th BRICS summit in Russia.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, held a bilateral meeting with the President of China, Xi Jinping, on the sidelines of the summit. It was the first bilateral meeting between the two countries' leaders in five years. It came in the aftermath of the 2020 border skirmishes between Indian and Chinese troops.

Sudan crash under investigation

Separately, reports from 21 October described the crash of an Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane in North Darfur, Sudan. The crew of two Russians and three Sudanese nationals were killed. The Rapid Support Forces claimed that they had shot the aircraft down with a surface-to-air missile, and said they had recovered its flight recorder. Russia said its diplomats in Sudan were investigating the crash.
