What happened on 7 July 2025 in the drone war

Summary

A look back at a day of Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians and a Ukrainian strike on a refinery in Krasnodar Krai.

What did the drone war look like on 7 July 2025? It was a day of strikes in both directions, with civilians bearing the cost on the Ukrainian side.

Russia launched more than 100 drones at areas across Ukraine on 7 July 2025. The attacks killed ten civilians and injured 38 others, according to reports from the time.

The same day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a long-range drone strike on Krasnodar Krai in Russia. The strike damaged the main oil refinery in Ilsky.

The wider pattern

The day's casualties fit a pattern documented over the course of the war. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has said that the Russian military exposed civilians to unnecessary and disproportionate harm by using cluster bombs and by firing weapons with wide-area effects into civilian areas. These include missiles, heavy artillery shells and multiple launch rockets.

Later assessments put the toll higher still. As of 2026, the attacks had resulted in between 16,000 deaths documented by the UN and an estimated 40,000 civilian deaths.

The events of 7 July 2025 were one day in that longer record: more than 100 drones, ten civilians killed, 38 injured, and a damaged refinery in Ilsky across the border.
