What followed the Bürgenstock peace summit in Switzerland

Summary
A look back at 17 June 2024, the first day after the two-day summit closed, as energy aid pledges and battlefield claims shaped the picture.
What was left on the table when the Global Peace Summit ended? On 17 June 2024, the day after the two-day gathering at the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland closed, the picture combined diplomatic effort, pledges of energy support and continued fighting.
The summit, dedicated to discussion of Ukraine's Peace Formula, ended on 16 June 2024. Ukraine's Peace Formula is an initiative and diplomatic platform that Ukraine proposed to the world community to achieve a just conclusion to the war. As later described, the event was held on 15–16 June and hosted by the Swiss president, Viola Amherd. Representatives from 92 nations and 8 international organisations attended, while Russia did not take part. It followed a series of four earlier international meetings.
Money for energy and relief
Aid announcements came alongside the summit. On 15 June 2024, the United States announced a $1.5bn package for Ukraine, focused primarily on the energy industry and humanitarian assistance. On 16 June, Norway said it would give Ukraine 1.1bn kroner (about US$103m) to help repair its energy infrastructure and secure electricity supply before the winter.
Both announcements concerned energy, the sector the two donors singled out for support.
Fighting continued
On 16 June 2024, Russia claimed it had captured the village of Zahirne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The claim was made as the summit closed.
A march in Kyiv
Also on 16 June, hundreds of LGBTQ+ members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and their supporters marched in central Kyiv. They demanded legal reforms to give same-sex couples more partnership rights. The march went ahead despite opposition from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and from counter-protesters.
The picture on 17 June 2024
Taken together, the reports from 15 and 16 June show a weekend in which Ukraine's diplomatic initiative was presented to a large international audience, two donors committed money to the energy system and humanitarian needs, and Russia reported a further advance in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. In Kyiv, demands for legal change on partnership rights were voiced in public.
