What did 20 June 2024 add to Ukraine's support?

Summary

A look back at Japanese sanctions on third-country firms and a Patriot delivery priority for Kyiv, both reported on 20 June 2024.

What did support for Ukraine look like on 20 June 2024? Two developments, one economic and one military, were reported that day.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced sanctions on firms based in China, India, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The stated reason was their alleged support for Russia in the Russo–Ukrainian war. The list was notable for naming companies in several countries rather than only in Russia itself.

The second development concerned air defence. As reported at the time, Ukraine was prioritised first among the countries due to receive ordered deliveries of MIM-104 Patriot missile systems from the United States. That placed Kyiv at the front of the queue for the systems.

Taken together, the two announcements pointed to pressure on Russia's supply networks and to support for Ukraine's defences. They came from different governments and addressed different problems, and the reports from the day do not link them. Each, though, was a concrete step announced on 20 June 2024.
