Moldova's EU accession talks begin with a decree

Summary

A look back at the day Moldova's president signed the decree launching negotiations, and at a Polish demand to Germany days earlier.

What did it take to open Moldova's path into the European Union? On 21 June 2024, president Maia Sandu signed the decree that begins negotiations on the country's accession to the EU.

Sandu also announced that the first Moldova–EU intergovernmental conference would take place on 25 June. The decree and the announced date set the timetable for the opening of talks.

A separate dispute between neighbours

A few days earlier, on 17 June 2024, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered Germany to explain a recorded incident in which German police appeared to abandon a migrant family in Osinów Dolny, Poland, just east of the Germany–Poland border.

The two developments were unrelated, but both showed how questions of EU membership and border practice were handled between neighbouring states in the same week.
