What did 23 June 2024 hold for Moldova's EU path?

Summary

A look back at the days around 23 June 2024, when Moldova's accession process gained a formal footing and a Polish–German dispute unfolded.

What was happening on 23 June 2024, as Moldova prepared to take a formal step towards the European Union? The groundwork had been laid two days earlier, on 21 June 2024, when Moldovan president Maia Sandu signed the decree that began negotiations on her country's accession to the EU.

Sandu also announced that the first Moldova–EU intergovernmental conference would take place on 25 June. By 23 June, then, the opening session was only two days away. The events formed part of the wider enlargement of the European Union, which also covered the accession of Ukraine.

A dispute on the Polish border

Elsewhere in the region, a different matter was drawing attention. On 17 June 2024, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered Germany to explain a recorded incident in which German police appeared to desert a migrant family in Osinów Dolny, Poland, just east of the Germany–Poland border.

The two items were unrelated in substance. Together they showed the region's politics on the eve of the 25 June conference: a candidate country moving into negotiations, and a neighbouring pair of EU members exchanging demands over conduct at their shared frontier.
