What did Tusk demand from Berlin over migrants?

Summary

A look back at the Polish-German border row and other regional developments in the days before 18 June 2024.

What was behind the diplomatic friction on the Germany–Poland border as of 18 June 2024? On 17 June 2024, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ordered Germany to explain a recorded incident in which German police appeared to abandon a migrant family in Osinów Dolny, Poland, just east of the border.

The row came days after another migration-related ruling. On 13 June 2024, the European Court of Justice fined Hungary €200 million and imposed a daily penalty of €1 million. The court found that Hungary had failed to follow the European Union's asylum laws and had illegally deported migrants.

Sanctions and signals

Washington also moved against Russia-linked targets in the preceding days. On 12 June 2024, the United States expanded secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions that had done business with more than 4,500 US-sanctioned Russian entities.

On the same date, the US imposed sanctions on Evghenia Guțul, the pro-Russian governor of Moldova's Gagauzia region.

Naval drills near Cuba

On 13 June 2024, a Russian warship and a nuclear-powered submarine carried out military drills in the Caribbean Sea, simulating a missile strike on enemy ships. They had passed near the coast of Florida to reach Havana, Cuba.
