After Bürgenstock: Kyiv's peace push and Norway's winter aid

Summary

A look back at the security picture around 18 June 2024, two days after the Swiss summit on Ukraine's Peace Formula ended.

What was the picture on 18 June 2024, two days after a major peace summit closed in Switzerland? The two-day Global Peace Summit, dedicated to discussion of Ukraine's Peace Formula, had ended on 16 June 2024 at the Bürgenstock Resort. The Peace Formula is a diplomatic platform that Ukraine proposed to the world community to achieve a just conclusion to the war.

A summit without Russia

The gathering, formally called the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, was held on 15–16 June 2024 and was hosted by the Swiss president, Viola Amherd. Representatives from 92 nations and 8 international organisations attended. Russia did not take part. The conference followed a series of four earlier international meetings.

Fighting continued

The diplomacy unfolded alongside continuing combat. On 16 June 2024, Russia claimed that it had captured the village of Zahirne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Energy support ahead of winter

Also on 16 June 2024, Norway announced that it would give Ukraine 1.1 billion kroner (US$103 million) to help repair its energy infrastructure and secure the country's electricity supply before the winter.

A march in Kyiv

The same day, hundreds of LGBTQ+ members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and their supporters marched in central Kyiv to demand legal reforms for more same-sex partnership rights. They did so despite opposition from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and from counter-protesters.
