Kursk incursion: what 6 August 2024 changed

Summary
A look back at the day Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia's Kursk Oblast, amid a week of battlefield and diplomatic shifts.
What did the war look like on 6 August 2024, the day Ukraine launched an incursion into Kursk Oblast in Russia? Reports from that day place the move alongside a cluster of other developments that had unfolded over a few days.
The Kursk operation was recorded as the start of what became known as the 2024 Kursk offensive. On the same date, Russia claimed that it had captured the village of Tymofiivka in Donetsk Oblast, part of the Eastern Ukraine campaign. Two fronts, one on Russian soil and one in Ukraine's east, were therefore active in the reporting of that day.
The days before
On 4 August 2024, Russia said its armed forces had taken the village of Novoselivka Persha, also in Donetsk Oblast. The claim fitted the pattern of Russian advances in the east that continued into the following days.
The same day brought news on military aid. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the country had received its first F-16 fighter aircraft from NATO allies. The announcement was part of the wider story of Western military support during the war.
A diplomatic break with Mali
Also on 4 August 2024, Mali cut all diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The reason given was that Ukraine had provided intelligence to Tuareg rebels, enabling them to ambush and kill large numbers of Wagner Group mercenaries and Malian troops.
The fighting behind that accusation was the battle of Tinzaouaten, near the Algeria–Mali border. It pitted a rebel coalition, the Strategic Framework for the Defense of the People of Azawad, against the Malian Armed Forces, backed by Russia's state-funded Wagner Group. The al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM also claimed to have taken part, though the coalition denied its involvement.
Reading the day
Taken together, the reports show a war that stretched well beyond a single front: new aircraft arriving for Ukraine, Russian claims of small gains in Donetsk Oblast, a diplomatic rupture in West Africa and, on 6 August 2024, a Ukrainian push across the border into Kursk Oblast. Of these, the incursion was the development that opened a new chapter in the conflict.
