What happened in Kursk Oblast on 8 August 2024?

Summary

A look back at the third day of Ukraine's cross-border incursion, when fighting reached Sudzha and Kyiv's president appeared to confirm the operation.

What was unfolding in Russia's Kursk Oblast on 8 August 2024? By that date, Ukraine's incursion, which began on 6 August 2024, had grown into a major cross-border operation, and the day brought several signs of its scale.

Fighting reaches Sudzha

Ukrainian troops and tanks entered the town of Sudzha, and local residents were forced to flee. The advance placed the fighting inside a Russian town rather than only along the frontier.

Strikes near Rylsk

Large explosions were reported near the town of Rylsk in Kursk Oblast. Videos on social media appeared to show a destroyed column of military vehicles.

The acting Governor of Kursk Oblast, Alexei Smirnov, and the Russian Ministry of Defence both said that Ukraine had launched twelve rockets and 14 drones into Russia.

Zelenskyy appears to confirm the operation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared to confirm that he had ordered a major cross-border operation inside Russia. He said that Russia had brought war to Ukrainian land and that it should feel what it had done.

Fighting elsewhere

The war continued on other fronts. On 6 August 2024, Russia had claimed that it captured the village of Tymofiivka in Donetsk Oblast, part of the fighting in eastern Ukraine that ran alongside the new operation in Kursk.
